For our August Employee Spotlight, we’re featuring Stephanie R. Munn! Since joining Team Karna in 2017, she has been serving on the World Trade Center Health Program. Stephanie is currently the Healthcare Operations Manager for the Member Services Team and based in our Greenbelt, Maryland office. While she admits to being innately shy, Stephanie gladly opened up to share more of her story with us.
Q: What is your position and what do you do?
I am the Healthcare Operations Manager for the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP). I manage the Member Services Team, which is comprised of the enrollment and certifications teams. We are the first line of the program that an applicant will encounter, our role is to process enrollment applications, along with supporting documentation. Upon completion of all requirements, and a decision is made the certifications team ensures the applicants medically necessary certifications are properly processed to support future care.
Q: What has been your favorite project at Karna and why?
I have only worked on the WTCHP program, so it is definitely my favorite project. I am grateful to be a part of a project that impacts the lives of people who were victims of the 9/11/01 attacks in a positive way. To know that I am helping people whose lives have been changed forever is inspirational and gives me an overall sense-of-well-being.
Q: What have you gained from working at Karna?
Karna is a great place to work. One of the first things that I noticed when I started working here in 2017 is how down to earth the employees are in the organization, starting with the CEO and throughout, the team members are approachable, easy to work with, extremely smart, but not pretentious. Karna values their employees, and their ideas in that, I have gained some new friends and a myriad of valuable knowledge.
Q: What do you do to stay fit/healthy?
I take daily walks. When I am short on time, I walk 2 miles, when I have more time, I walk about 5 miles. I also attempt to do yoga. My son’s fiancé is a yoga instructor, so she uses me as a guinea pig to try new poses.
Q: Do you have a tip for coping with stress?
Meditation, reading and sitting still allows me to see where I am in the moment and how I can get to a better place. I am an overthinker, so just sitting with my thoughts allows me to process and understand what I am stressing over. Most of the time, I find it is not that big of a deal and has a solution.
Q: Where is your hometown?
Boston, Massachusetts. I was born in Thomaston, GA moved to Boston when I was 7 years old. I have heard, your hometown is where you grew up and was educated, so I claim my beloved Boston. I still have strong ties to Georgia, as that is where most of my family still resides so that will always be my first love.
Q: What did you want to be growing up?
An attorney. I still love to state my case, provide the facts, prove the facts, and rest on my wins. 😊
Q: You are happiest when?
When I am spending time with my guy, family, and friends. They are the best! So much fun, very transparent, funny, and super supportive.
Q: What is something most people do not know about you?
I am innately shy, but I love to tell long, detailed stories. Go figure.
Q: Anything you would like to add or say to help your colleagues and clients know you a little better?
I am the mother of one of the most amazing human beings on earth, my son is hands down my hero. He has inspired me in so many ways, I want to be like him when I grow up. Also, in my next life, I want to own a restaurant on the beach in the Caribbean, I absolutely adore the sun and I love to eat.
